What is the VTB league?

The VTB United League, also known as the Russian: Единая Лига ВТБ, is an international professional men's club basketball league that has significantly evolved since its inception in the 2009–10 season. This article aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of the league, spanning its history, member teams, notable achievements, and more.

Inauguration and Expansion

The VTB United League was founded in 2009, featuring clubs from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, and Ukraine in its inaugural season. Over the years, the league has seen a significant expansion, with the addition of teams from Belarus, Finland, and Poland in subsequent seasons. The league's growth continued as it welcomed new teams from the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan. However, the number of teams fluctuated in different seasons, reaching a peak of 20 teams in the 2012–13 season and decreasing to 16 teams in the 2014–15 season, with the withdrawal of teams from Lithuania and Ukraine.

Unification with the Russian PBL

In May 2012, the possibility of uniting with the VTB United League was raised by the PBL clubs to enhance competition between Russian basketball clubs. This led to the formation of the Eastern European Professional Basketball League. Subsequently, the VTB United League was officially recognized by FIBA Europe in September 2013 and later by FIBA World in October 2014.

League Structure and Member Clubs

The league currently consists of clubs primarily from Russia, along with one each from Belarus and Kazakhstan. Notable member teams include CSKA Moscow, UNICS Kazan, Zenit Saint Petersburg, and Lokomotiv Kuban, among others. The league also holds a youth competition known as the VTB United Youth League.

International Recognition and Sponsorship

The VTB United League has gained recognition on the international stage, with the league being sponsored by the Russian state-owned VTB Bank. It also contains clubs from countries that are part of both the European and Asian FIBA zones, necessitating recognition by both FIBA bodies.

Records and Achievements

The league has witnessed remarkable feats and achievements over the years. From the most 3-point field goals attempted in a game to the largest margin of victory, the league's records showcase the outstanding talent and competitive spirit of the teams involved. Notable records include the best regular season record achieved by Khimki in the 2013–14 season and the most wins attained by CSKA in the 2015–16 season.

2021–22 Season: Controversy and Resilience

The 2021–22 season saw a significant turn of events as ten teams were left to compete after the withdrawal of Polish and Estonian clubs from the league in protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite this, the league demonstrated resilience and continued to showcase high-level basketball competition.

Notable Players and Statistical Leaders

The league has been home to several outstanding players who have left their mark on the game. Notable statistical leaders include Xavier Rathan-Mayes in points, Royce Hamm, Jr. in rebounds, Thomas Heurtel in assists, Ismael Bako in blocks, and Markell Johnson in steals, among others.

The VTB United League stands as a testament to the spirit of international basketball competition, bringing together clubs from diverse regions to compete at the highest level. The league's journey from its inception to its current status as the first tier of Russian professional club basketball reflects its commitment to excellence and the development of the sport.
